Carnival (the three-week period before Greek Orthodox Ash Monday)
Zakynthos is well-known for its carnival (with strong influences from the the famous Venice Carnival). It is a mass celebration for locals as well as for many visitors. During the whole carnival period, there is a spirit of joyfulness, following with local dancing events and parades with people disguised in themed carnival costumes. On last two Sundays, the Parade of the King Carnival goes all around the city of Zakynthos Island.
Greek Orthodox Easter (moveable holiday - its celebration falls on the first Sunday after the full moon of the spring equinox.)
Easter is the biggest celebration of the Orthodox Christians and the one richest in folklore. Holy Week and Easter are celebrated in great splendour and devoutness.
Zakynthos' Easter is very well known for its ceremonial all over the country and thousands of visitors visit the island to take part to this spectacular ritual.
May 21st
Anniversary for all the Ionion Islands, including Zakynthos, that united with Greece in 1864. A parade is held in Zakynthos center.
June
A renowed festival is that of Saint Mavra in the village of Machairadho.
August
One of the most characteristic festivals is that of Saint Dionysios, patron of the island, on August 24th. A splendid litany is held and the Saint’s relic carried in procession through the town.
